What is an AAC block?
AAC means Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. In simple words, it is concrete with lots of tiny air bubbles inside. The bubbles make the block light.
The blocks are made in a factory and cured with hot steam under pressure. This makes them strong and even in size.
Why builders use AAC blocks
- Light weight. Less load on beams, columns and the foundation.
- Big size. One block covers the space of many small bricks, so walls go up faster.
- Fewer joints. You need less mortar.
- Cooler rooms. The air bubbles slow down heat coming through the wall.
- Easy to cut. You can cut it with a hand saw for pipes and openings.
Where to use AAC blocks
- Outside walls
- Inside and partition walls
- Homes, shops, offices and tall buildings
Tips for laying AAC blocks
- Use a block joint mortar or adhesive made for AAC blocks.
- Keep the first layer level and straight.
- Do not soak AAC blocks in water like red bricks. Only wet the surface lightly if needed.
- Let the wall set before you plaster it.
Building walls next to beams and columns? Use glass fiber mesh at the joints to help stop plaster cracks.
